Why Choose Hockey

Hockey is all about unforgettable moments and cherished memories. There are countless reasons to step onto the ice, but for Hockey Edmonton, it's simple:

  • Hockey is Fun - Whether it's a pickup game on the street, a showdown at the local ODR, or a sanctioned league game in an arena, hockey is pure Canadian fun.

  • Hockey Shapes Character - Hockey provides experiences that serve as the foundation for a child’s confidence and success that last long after the jersey is taken off for the last time.

  • Hockey Creates Community - From the bonds created between teammates to the connections parents develop in the stands, hockey brings people together far beyond the final buzzer, forging friendships that last a lifetime.

  • Hockey Welcomes Everyone - No matter who you are, where you come from, or why you want to play, Hockey Edmonton will have a place for you to enjoy this wonderful game.

Learn to Play Hockey

Learning something new can be intimidating, however there are a number of ways for your child to learn the basic skills needed to enjoy hockey for life.

The easiest way to learn to play hockey, though, is just getting out there and trying it on your driveway or at your local rink. It is NEVER too late to learn to play hockey!

  • Learn to Skate

Have fun learning basic skating skills, at any age with fun, low-cost programming.

  • Learn Basic Hockey Skills

Sign up for short-term or one-day programs to learn the basics, before officially joining organized hockey.

  • Join Minor Hockey

Get in on the action and sign your child up for organized hockey with a team. No matter their experience level, the organization you choose will help your child develop the skills they need to succeed on their hockey journey. Sessions are tailored to be age and experience appropriate, ensuring your child gets the most out of their hockey experience.

The Basics

Step 1: Determine Your Child’s Age Category

First, let’s confirm how old your child is as of December 31, 2024 to determine their age division for the 2024-25 season. It is important to note that the December 31 age cut-off is a firm date; no exceptions to play within a different age category can be made.

Recreation Stream

The Recreation stream offers the lowest commitment, as participants only play games. The program is offered from U11 to U21 and the typical commitment is one game per week.

Community Stream

The most common and flexible option for participation, community programs are offered from U7 to U18 and are open to players of all skill levels. These programs are an affordable option that have the most flexibility in the commitment required. The typical commitment for community programs can range from 2 to 4 sessions per week depending on the age and skill level.

Step 2: Decide Which Program/Stream

The program that your child can choose to participate in is based on his or hers desired goals, the skill level, and time commitment. Programs run from October until March.

Here is an overview of the three program streams that Hockey Edmonton offers:

Elite Stream

Club programs are designed for those participants who are seeking a higher level of development and competition. Offered from U13 to U18, these programs have a higher cost and commitment because of the increase competitive structure of the programs. The typical commitment for club programs can range from 4 to 6 sessions per week.

Step 3: Find Your Organization

Hockey Edmonton has a number of organizations that your child can register with based on your geographical location. As someone registering for the first time, the easiest way to determine which organization is a fit for your child(ren) is to reach out to Hockey Edmonton via the form here.

Alternatively, you can directly email office@hockeyedmonton.ca. When emailing please include your child(rens) date of birth and your street address and a representative from Hockey Edmonton will provide you with your options and answer any other questions you may have.
