Girls-Only Hockey

Proud to play like a girl.

Weโ€™re leveling the playing field, and shattering glass ceilings in the process. Who said we had to leave all the fun of hockey just for the boys? Hockey Edmonton champions gender equality and opportunity for all girls, and we certainly encourage girls to play on co-ed teams. However, girls-only hockey programs are also an important opportunity to expose girls to coaches, role models and mentors with whom they can relate.

If you are interested in a girls-only hockey program, the Edmonton Female Hockey Alliance (EFHA) connects all girls playing minor hockey (U7 to U18 AA) in the city under a single association.

Encouraging Girls to Play Hockey

Long gone are the days where girls got dragged along to the rink for their brotherโ€™s hockey practices and games, only to have suggested to them to โ€˜try figure skating insteadโ€™. How can you foster a positive environment for little girls to dream big, and see that women playing hockey is a reality? For starters, encourage the girls in your life to try hockey.

Here are some other great ways to help grow the girlsโ€™ game:

  • Watch womenโ€™s hockey and build a culture of watching womenโ€™s sports in your home.

  • Coach or volunteer with a girlsโ€™ team in your local community or school in the area.

  • Support the companies that sponsor womenโ€™s hockey.

Itโ€™s important to introduce the game to girls, provide girls opportunities to play with their peers, and get them playing in girlsโ€™ leagues at a younger age.

U18 AAA Edmonton Junior Oilers White

Junior Oilers White, Edmontonโ€™s U18 AAA all-girl team, is the current reigning 2024 AFHL U18 AAA Provincial Champions, and the first team from Edmonton to compete at the Esso (National) Cup in the last decade.

Numerous graduates of the Junior Oilers White program have gone on to play NCAA Div I, USport, and ACAC.
